Exceeds the most stringent performance specifications of all major U.S. and foreign automotive and truck manufacturers.
Provides up to two-times the wear protection of other motor oils.
Increases the life of your vehicle.
Improves performance, fuel economy and efficiency.
Diesel oil and filtration products designed to deliver 1,000,000 miles for over-the-road trucks before engine overhaul.
Used by many national racing teams, fleets, police departments, construction firms and trucking companies.
Since 1972, AMSOIL Synthetics have proven to be the BEST. AMSOIL also engineers and manufactures Super Duty Oil filters which have a 25,000 mile service life as well as specialized filtration systems for commercial and fleet applications in cars and light, medium and heavy trucks which can filter particles down to less than one micron ( a standard full flow oil filter can only filter to 20-25 microns, and at a reduced efficiency) making oil changes virtually unnecessary and virtually eliminating engine wear. These filters have been proven by millions of miles of over-the road trucks, construction equipment and fleet service.
The “Genuine Synthetic PAO Formulated” designation displayed on AMSOIL packaging indicates that the oils are formulated with Polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base stocks.
This chemistry is the industry's premier base stock technology. Unlike coventional mineral-based chemistries, AMSOIL PAO base stocks contain fully saturated, hydrogenated molecules and are free of wax and other impurities. Combined with an exact balance of premium additives, it delivers superior hot and cold temperature performance, resists oxidation an acid formation and provides long term wear protection.
THE ROLE OF MOTOR OIL
Before we can discuss what makes a good motor oil, it helps to understand what role motor oil actually plays in the performance of an engine.
While motor oils serve a variety of functions, they are primarily necessary to lubricate and to cool the engine. When the engine is at rest, the motor oil sits in the bottom of the engine block in what is called the oil pan. Upon start-up, an oil pump feeds oil from the pan to the oil distribution system by means of a network of passages, tubes, grooves and holes leading to the engine bearings and other surfaces needing pressurized oil for lubrication. Other parts, like the overhead valve system, receive a carefully controlled quantity of non-pressurized oil through splashing or spray.
In addition to lubricating and cooling engine parts, motor oil must allow easy starting, protect the engine from corrosion and oxidation, keep the engine clean, form a tight seal between piston rings and cylinder walls and help the engine use fuel efficiently.
In days gone by motor oil was made from the throwaway byproducts of a barrel of crude oil after everything useful was taken from it. In those early days the filter, if you had one at all, was a by-pass type, filtering only a small percentage of the oil. In some instance the filter was little more than a screen and the oil was changed every five hundred or thousand miles. (Some of us recall grandpa's stories of tires needing to be changed on every trip to town, the idea of longevity being somewhat foreign back then.)
As cars and their engines became more sophisticated, so too the requirements of a lubricant became increasingly demanding. In the 1960's jet fighter pilots and their mechanics were becoming aware of the advantages of synthetic oils, and a few of them experimented with the notion of synthetic lubrication for automobiles. One of these pilots, Lt. Colonel Albert J. Amatuzio, went further than the haphazard experiments of his peers. His ten year quest resulted in the development of AMSOIL, the first automotive synthetic motor oil to exceed the certification requirements of the American Petroleum Institute (API).
SYNTHETIC VS. CONVENTIONAL PETROLEUM
Conventional lubricants are refined from crude oil which has thousands of types of molecules. Refining is a process of physically separating the impurities from the oil and further separating the light and heavy components. Because refining separates products by weight, it groups molecules of similar weight and dissimilar structure. The result is a lubricant with a wide assortment of molecules. Some of the substances in crude oil are detrimental to lubrication. Paraffins, for example, are a common conventional oil contaminant that causes motor oil to thicken in cold temperatures.
Synthetic motor oils are made from pure chemicals, not refined crude. Their components are chemically reacted to produce finished products with pre-designed performance characteristics. Because of their molecular uniformity, they excel in reducing friction, which improves fuel efficiency, controls heat and reduces wear. This molecular uniformity also helps synthetics resist thinning in hot temperatures and thickening in cold.
PRICE
Ironically, we live in an era in which people are spending more money than ever on large vehicles or cool looking vehicles -- PT Cruisers, SUVs, Hummers, and dualies. Insurance payments alone in most households run ten times greater than motor oil costs. People are passionate about their vehicles. How can they not be equally dedicated to protecting their investment by using premium lubricants that promise longer life to the object of their passion. You wouldn't expect price to be that big of a deal, yet it is for some people. For this reason the price myth must be addressed.
When people talk about price, they generally think in terms of initial cost instead of life cycle cost. Price is only an issue if you apply the 3,000 mile oil change rule to all motor oils alike. In truth, the service life of synthetics can be extended much longer due to their resistance to oxidation and other forms of degradation. With proper filtration engine oil can be safely used for much longer periods, and is thereby less costly than petroleum in the long run. Add to this the reduced fuel consumption, fewer maintenance bills and optimal performance characteristics and running anything but a premium synthetic motor oil should not even be a consideration.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
As you can readily see there is no single measure that stands alone as the signature of superior performance. A motor oil serves a variety of functions in a range of roles inside the engine. What tests do show is that synthetic motor oils as a class are far and away superior to petroleum based products.

WHY HARLEY OWNERS CHOOSEAMSOIL
Wear Test Comparison - AMSOILvs. Harley Screamin' Eagle
The recent introduction of Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Lubricant by Harley-Davidson® indicates the Motor Company has finally recognized the benefits of running synthetic motorcycle oil in their air-cooled engines. After years of advising dealers and customers to avoid using synthetic oils in their bikes, it's natural to wonder why the company is suddenly marketing one.
For the past 22 years, Harley-Davidson® has claimed its petroleum-based Genuine H-D Oil is best for the "unique requirements of Harley-Davidson® air-cooled V-twin engines." However, laboratory testing has consistently revealed that Genuine H-D Oil does not provide the best protection possible for Harley-Davidson® engines. In fact, Four-Ball Wear Tests show Harley- Davidson® 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil leaves a wear scar nearly 80 percent larger than that left byAMSOILSynthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil.
One of the major benefits of running a synthetic motorcycle oil is its resistance to oxidation and thermal degradation, which inhibit the formation of sludge and deposits that contribute to increased wear. In the past, Harley-Davidson® has defended use of its Genuine H-D Oil by arguing that oil breakdown in extreme heat is a non-issue because extreme heat conditions are not normally faced by motorcycle engines, while the superior cold-temperature benefits of synthetics also don't apply to Harleys.
The fact is, engine oil in Harley-Davidson® motorcycles is subject to very high temperatures. Being air-cooled, Harley-Davidson® engines get especially hot while idling in traffic, commonly reaching temperatures up to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. As heat and oxidation increase, so does viscosity, adversely affecting the lubricating qualities of the oil and increasing wear.
The water, soot and acid byproducts of combustion also contribute to deposit formation. Harley-Davidson® has stressed the importance of regular oil changes in order to remove these contaminants. Of course, promoting regular oil changes is also a good way to promote using petroleum-based Genuine H-D Oil. High-quality synthetic oils formulated with high-performance additives effectively withstand such contaminants, allowing motorcyclists to safely extend drain intervals.
In support of their about-face and the introduction of a synthetic oil, Harley maintains that "the Motor Company has never supported the use of synthetic products in our vehicles because there has never been any test validations completed on the numerous formulations in HD/Buell motorcycles. This product has been exclusively designed for Harley-Davidson® and is the only synthetic product TESTED and CERTIFIED by Harley-Davidson® engineering for use in HD/Buell motorcycles."
Although this is necessary marketing hype, Harley-Davidson® V-twin air-cooled engines are not unique in their lubrication requirements and do not require a special Harley-only fluid (see letter from Harley-Davidson). There is nothing about Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil that sets it apart from, or makes it better than, many other synthetic motorcycle oil formulations, except that Harley-Davidson® is marketing it and directly profiting from the sales.
According to Harley-Davidson®, one of the unique benefits offered by Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is its versatility. For the first time the company is recommending an oil that can be used in the engines, primary chain cases and transmissions of most Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, including Evolution XL, Evolution 1340, Twin Cam 88 and 88B, Revolution and Buell models. This feature, however, is not unique. AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil may also be used in the engines, primary chain cases and transmissions of these applications, providing superior lubricating protection in each component.
How does Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil measure up toAMSOILin wear protection? Four-Ball Wear Test results indicate thatAMSOILSynthetic Motorcycle Oil still provides the best protection possible for motorcycles. In fact, Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil leaves a wear scar nearly 80 percent larger thanAMSOIL20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil.
Not only does AMSOILSynthetic Motorcycle Oil offer greater wear protection than Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, it also delivers greater value. Suggested retail price of Screamin' Eagle® is nearly $2 a quart higher than AMSOIL 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil. And because AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil may be used for extended drain intervals of up to twice the manufacturer's suggested interval, while Screamin' Eagle® is recommended for standard drain intervals, AMSOILcustomers realize additional savings.
Harley-Davidson® claims Screamin' Eagle® Synthetic Motorcycle Oil has been "exclusively designed" for use in their motorcycles, pointing to extensive bench testing and over 230,000 miles of durability testing to back it up.AMSOILINC. has 33 years of experience providing superior lubricating protection for all brands of motorcycles, and AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils have been tested in millions of over-the-road miles. Testimonials from countless motorcyclists further demonstrate the superiority of AMSOILSynthetic Motorcycle Oils.
Formulated with top-of-the-line synthetic base stocks and high-temperature deposit control additives, AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils provide superior protection and performance for motorcycles in all operating conditions. AMSOILMotorcycle Oils effectively with stand oxidation and thermal degradation, keep wear to an absolute minimum, hold contaminants in suspension and keep engines running cool and clean.

Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172), 40kg pressure @ 150 degrees C, 1800 rpm for 1 hour duration
April 2003 test results
The Four-Ball Wear Test is the industry's standard test method for measuring the wear preventive characteristics of a lubricant. Placed in a bath of the test lubricant, three fixed steel balls are put into contact with a fourth ball in rotating contact at preset test conditions. Lubricant wear protection properties are measured by comparing the average wear scars on the three fixed balls. The smaller the average wear scar, the better the protection.

Shortsupplies and ever-increasing demand have pushed crude oil barrel prices to record highs over the summer and motorists have been directly affected. Gasoline is one of the primary products produced from crude oil, and pump prices are directly affected by the prices refiners pay for crude oil. In fact, the average price per gallon of gasoline reached levels over 50 cents higher than last summer, causing motorists to alter their driving habits and look for every and any way to get the most for their fuel dollar.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the price of crude oil represented an average of 42.6 percent of retail gasoline prices between 2000 and 2003, with refinery processing costs, marketing and distribution costs and gasoline station costs and taxes comprising the balance. It is the volatility of crude oil prices that is most responsible for fluctuating gasoline prices.
AMSOILSynthetic Motor Oils have been shown to yield significant increases in fuel economy over conventional motor oils. Petroleum-based lubricants are composed of irregular molecules of various sizes that create excess friction, in addition to the friction generated between the moving parts. The vehicle's engine must burn extra fuel to overcome this friction, decreasing fuel economy.
AMSOIL synthetic lubricants, on the other hand, contain only smooth, uniform molecules that effectively reduce friction and improve fuel efficiency.
Conventional lubricants are also very susceptible to volatility.
When the oil's lighter molecules volatize during hot operating conditions viscosity increases and the oil becomes more difficult to pump, consuming more energy and reducing fuel economy. Because AMSOIL synthetic lubricants contain uniformly sized molecules, they resist volatization, maintain their viscosity and allow more fuel to be used for vehicles propulsion, improving fuel economy.
The use of AMSOILsynthetic motor oils, gear lubes and dive train fluids can have a profoundimpact on fuel economy. Industry tests demonstrates
that an average passenger car can conservatively decrease its fuel consumption by two to five percent by switching to synthetic lubrications, while independent testing shows that trucks can decrease fuel consumption by 8.2 percent.
Many AMSOILcustomers report even larger gains in fuel economy.
In addition to fuel savings, AMSOILsynthetic lubricants also allow motorists to reduce oil usage through extended drain intervals, all while significantly reducing friction and wear, improving engine performance and extending equipment life.
